Shortly after its foundation in 1956, the folk art group Die Spelewei vzw organized its very first local harvest festival. What started as a small community event quickly grew into the International Folklore Festival of Westerlo – today one of the oldest folklore dance festivals in Belgium.
Every year in mid-August, the festival takes place on the beautiful forecourt of Westerlo’s late 19th-century castle. Five groups in total take part: Die Spelewei itself, a Belgian flag-waving group, and three carefully selected amateur folk groups from around the world. Together, they bring their cultures to life through vibrant traditional dances and music.
Hospitality has always been at the heart of our festival. The visiting groups stay with local host families, who open their homes and hearts for six unforgettable days. Year after year, participants praise the warmth and generosity of their hosts, while the families themselves cherish the friendships and cultural exchanges that last long after the festival is over. This spirit of sharing and joy is what makes the International Folklore Festival of Westerlo a truly unique experience – both for our guests and our community.
The International Folklore Festival Westerlo is a proud member of CIOFF, a recognition that serves as a quality label for our organization and its international cultural mission.

In 2026, the International Folklore Festival Westerlo will take place from Friday 7 August to Wednesday 12 August.
The heart of the festival is formed by three stage performances, where all groups shine on stage:
• Saturday evening (8 PM)
• Sunday afternoon (2 PM)
• Tuesday afternoon (1:30 PM – senior performance)
But our festival is so much more than just these shows. The program is filled with cultural exchange, fun activities and warm encounters, making it an unforgettable week for both participants and hosts.
During all three shows, the audience can also browse the merchandise stands of the participating groups
Westerlo is a lively town of about 25,000 inhabitants, situated in the province of Antwerp, in the Flemish region of Belgium. It is only 50 km from Antwerp and 60 km from Brussels.
The weekend shows take place in the beautiful front courtyard of the historic Town Hall, a late 19th-century castle that was once the residence of Countess Jeanne de Merode.
The senior show takes place in a comfortable indoor concert hall. In case of bad weather, the Saturday and Sunday shows will also be moved indoors to the indoor concert hall.
All folk dance performances must be accompanied by live music and presented in traditional costumes.
Groups prepare a program of 20–25 minutes. Each group will perform at all three shows.
Performances should be as varied as possible across the three appearances.
The weekend shows take place on an outdoor stage in the front yard of the town hall / castle. All facilities such as stage lighting, a side stage for musicians with microphones and separate dressing rooms for each participating group are provided.
The dance stage has a surface of 8 x 10 meters. Next to it, the musicians have a stage of 3 x 5 meters.
